They also noted that lack of trust and comfort with delegation can hinder this shift in focus, leading to burnout and negative consequences for teams and organizations.


Leadership, Self-Awareness, and Motivations

Rob and Jonathan discussed the importance of self-awareness and understanding one's motivations in leadership. Rob emphasized the need to recognize and manage one's energy, particularly in relation to controlling aspects of work and being a hero to team members. He suggested that these tendencies could be limiting and suggested that leaders should focus on higher impact activities. Jonathan agreed, adding that the desire to be a hero could stem from ego and the need for validation. Both agreed that self-reflection and understanding one's motivations are crucial for effective leadership.


Balancing Servant Leadership and Development

Jonathan and Rob discussed the importance of servant leadership and the need for leaders to strike a balance between helping their team and allowing them to develop independently. Jonathan emphasized that effective leaders should coach and mentor their team members, rather than taking on all their problems, to help them grow and develop. Rob agreed, adding that leaders should also learn to be still and reflect on their actions to ensure they are leading at a high level. They concluded that servant leadership, when done correctly, can lead to a more effective and empowered team.


Embracing Reflection for Better Decision-Making

Rob and Jonathan discussed the importance of taking time to settle down and reflect, despite it feeling like a waste of time. They emphasized that this practice can lead to better decision-making and increased productivity. Rob also encouraged leaders to take at least 130 days off per year and not work during this time, suggesting that this could help them recharge and avoid burnout. Jonathan agreed, sharing his personal experience of increased productivity and sharper thinking after taking short breaks.
