He has been with ICIS for about 4 years and is responsible for the business and growth strategies. Alison expressed his enthusiasm for the field of DEI and his belief in the importance of a strong DEI strategy for effective business strategies. He also shared his journey from the financial markets to the chemicals industry, highlighting the critical role the chemicals industry plays in driving innovation and solving societal problems. He noted the industry's shift towards a more diverse and inclusive environment, with a focus on innovation and diversity of thought.


Attracting and Retaining Female Talent

Alison discussed the progress made in attracting and retaining talent, particularly women, in the industry. She noted a shift in conversation and the emergence of non-profit organizations like Women in Chemicals, which aim to empower and support female professionals. Jonathan agreed with Alison's observations, noting the challenges faced by industries historically dominated by men, such as tech and STEM fields. He highlighted the importance of creating an inclusive culture to retain women in these industries.


Promoting Gender Diversity in STEM

They noted that despite efforts to attract and retain female talent, there is often a lack of support and progression opportunities. Alison highlighted the importance of inclusive frameworks and role models, citing the increasing visibility of successful women in STEM as a positive trend. They also discussed the role of male sponsorship in creating a supportive environment for career progression. The conversation concluded with Alison sharing her personal experience of seeing a positive change in the representation of women in STEM at her daughter's school.


Improving Workplace Inclusivity and Visibility

Both agreed that the situation is improving but there is still a significant gap to be addressed.

Alison emphasized the importance of collaboration between industries and companies, as well as the need for both top-down and bottom-up approaches. They agreed that a diverse workforce requires an inclusive culture to ensure a sense of purpose and belonging. Alison also highlighted the importance of external groups and associations in sharing ideas and experiences to drive progress.
